Lawn Advice

Laying a new lawn can feel like laying a new carpet.  But without the proper care and attention, a new lawn can quickly deteriorate.  Here are a tips to keep your new lawn looking as good as it did on the day it was laid.

The First 4 – 6 Weeks

The most crucial period in the life of a newly laid lawn is usually around the first four weeks.  During this period, the turf needs time to root itself properly into the soil.

  1.  The soil and grass need water and should not be allowed to dry out.  We would recommend that you water your newly laid lawn twice a day for at least the first week, then once it has started to root in, 2 – 3 times a week.  After about 6 weeks it can then be dropped down to once a week.
  2. The lawn should not be walked upon unless absolutely necessary, (for example, if it needs to be watered) for the first 3 – 4 weeks.  If the ground is too wet, walking on it can create divots making the lawn uneven.

When Can I Mow my New Lawn

This really depends on several factors.

Your new lawn should start growing within a few days of putting down and between Spring and Autumn (weather depending) your lawn should be well rooted enough in 2 – 3 weeks and ready for its first cut.

For the first few cuts, do not cut the grass too short

It is important however to mow your lawn regularly as it encourages growth and creates a thicker healthier lawn.  Do not let your lawn get too long between mowing.

If the weather is wet, or you are still watering your lawn, we would recommend you wait for a dry day.

Treament

Before your lawn comes to you, the Turf Grower will have fertilised and maintained the Turf to a high standard to ensure when the Turf gets to you it will be healthy and green.

Before we lay the lawn, we will fertilise the ground to encourage strong rooting so your new lawn will get the very best possible start.

We would recommend that you start treating your new lawn around 6 weeks after it is laid. When applying a feed, please be sure to use a feed that is appropriate to the time of the year.
